What the Water Kept
The Story Behind the Artifact
Long before there was Middle Island Creek, this land lay beneath an ancient inland sea. Mountains rose, waters gathered into the great Monongahela Lake, and over countless generations carved the valleys that now define this part of Appalachia.
Long before my family called these hills home, others did.
Someone shaped this arrowhead by hand. It was carried across this landscape, then lost to time. Flood after flood reshaped the land, carrying soil, stone, and memory with it. Buried beneath layers of earth, the arrowhead waited quietly until one day it found its way back into the light.
When I found it, I couldn’t stop wondering about the person who had once held it.
Not their name.
Not their story.
Simply their presence.
As I created this photograph, I saw more than an arrowhead. I saw two moments in time touching for just an instant. The figure belongs to another world, another lifetime, completely unaware that centuries later someone would pause to wonder about the life they lived.
Between us rests a single piece of stone.
A quiet reminder that every landscape carries stories far older than our own, and that sometimes the land chooses to reveal one.
